A special limited edition ULTRA HD Blu-ray of both films, the “4K Remaster Collection,” will also be released. Mobile Police Patlabor, which has been running since 1988, is a media mix work set in modern Japan, where violent crimes committed by large construction robots called “Labors” are rampant, and depicts the struggles of the 2nd Platoon of the newly established Special Vehicles Section 2 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

In the first animated feature film, “Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie,” released in 1989, a computer virus planted by someone causes Labors to go out of control one after another in various parts of Tokyo. The story depicts the members of the Second Platoon of the Special Vehicle Section 2 closing in on the invisible culprit in order to prevent further large-scale rampages. In the second film, “Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie,” released in 1993, a mysterious missile incident triggers a conflict between the police and the Self-Defense Forces. The Second Platoon, who had begun to walk their own paths, reunite to pursue terrorists who have re-enacted the outbreak of war in Tokyo.

A Classic Mecha Series Gets the 4K Treatment Again

The return of the two Mobile Police Patlabor movies in 4K is more than just a re-release—it’s a celebration of one of the most influential mecha franchises in anime history. For longtime fans, the October screenings offer a rare chance to see these films on the big screen with modern visual clarity, preserving the intricate animation and atmosphere that made them iconic. The simultaneous Ultra HD Blu-ray release ensures that even those who can’t make it to theaters can still experience the films in the best possible quality at home. This move also signals how classic anime films are increasingly being preserved and reintroduced for a new generation of viewers.
