“Jardugal” by Tomato Soup Gets TV Anime Adaptation by Science SARU

It has been officially announced that Jardugal, the historical manga by Tomato Soup, will be adapted into a TV anime. The series will be animated by Science SARU, the acclaimed studio behind Dandadan and The Tale of the Heike, and will air on the TV Asahi network. To commemorate the announcement, a special promotional video has also been released.

Originally serialized on the web manga site Sufuru, run by the editorial team of Akita Shoten’s Elegance Eve, Jardugal has garnered widespread acclaim. The manga won first place in the women’s category of Takarajimasha’s This Manga is Amazing! 2023, and was nominated for the prestigious Manga Taisho awards for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024.

Set in the 13th-century harem of the Mongol Empire, the story follows Sitara (also known as Fatima), a young girl taken captive after her hometown is destroyed. She meets Dregene, the sixth wife of the second emperor, Ogedei—an intelligent and complex woman with mixed feelings toward the empire. Together, Sitara and Dregene use their wits to take a stand against the empire’s overwhelming power.

The special PV features atmospheric West Asian-style music and showcases original illustrations of Sitara and Dregene. It highlights their growing alliance and determination to challenge the dominance of the Mongol Empire.

To celebrate the anime adaptation, Tomato Soup shared a heartfelt comment along with a charming cartoon-style illustration of the main characters, Sitara and Dregene.

Comment from Tomato Soup (Original Creator):

“More than ten years before I began drawing Jadugal of the Tent, I was captivated by the history of the Mongol Empire. I remember thinking, ‘I wish there were an anime like this.’ From there, I started imagining scenes in my head—what kind of characters would appear, and what kind of story would unfold if such an anime existed.

I knew I couldn’t make anime myself, but I could draw manga. So I began sketching ideas on the backs of copy paper. Little by little, those sketches turned into pages, and before I knew it, they had become a proper manga.

And now, it’s actually being adapted into an anime.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey. Now that the story has been passed on to the animation team, I’m excited to cheer on Jadugal of the Tent as it takes flight.”
