Japan’s weekend box office ranking for August 15–17 (provided by Kogyo Tsushinsha) has been announced. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Castle Arc Part 1: Akaza Returns held the No.1 spot for the fifth consecutive week. Over the three-day weekend, the film attracted 1.218 million viewers and earned 1.875 billion yen, bringing its cumulative total to 18.27 million admissions and 25.7 billion yen in revenue. This achievement pushes it past Your Name. (25.17 billion yen, 2016) and Frozen (25.5 billion yen, 2014), making it the fourth highest-grossing film in Japan, behind only Titanic (27.77 billion yen, 1997). On August 17, the fourth key visual was also revealed, depicting the battle between the Demon Slayer Corps’ Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho and Upper Rank Two demon Doma.
Jurassic World: New Earth maintained its position at No.2, while National Treasure climbed back up to No.3. Tokyo MER: Running Emergency Room – Nankai Mission followed at No.4.
At No.5, Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Gorgeous! Blazing Kasukabe Dancers drew 246,000 viewers and earned 309 million yen over the weekend, surpassing a cumulative total of 1.06 million admissions and 1.3 billion yen in revenue.
Debuting at No.6 was Yukikaze, followed by About a Certain Place in the Kinki Region at No.7, Star-Linker Elio at No.8, and Haunted Apartment Zoku: Scary Floor Plan at No.9. Rounding out the top ten was Kamen Rider GAV: Invaders of the Candy House, which was screened as a double feature with Number One Sentai Gojuuger: Revival of the Tegasword.
