“First TV Broadcast of Miyazaki’s ‘How Do You Live?’ and ‘Porco Rosso’ on Friday Road Show”

Studio Ghibli’s latest film, How Do You Live?, directed by legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, will be aired uncut on Friday Road Show on May 2. This marks the film’s first-ever terrestrial television broadcast in Japan.

In addition to this highly anticipated screening, Porco Rosso—another beloved Miyazaki classic—will air the following week, offering two consecutive weeks of Ghibli magic on Friday Road Show.

This is Miyazaki’s first film in 10 years since The Wind Rises. Upon its release in July 2023, only a single poster was revealed, as Miyazaki wanted audiences to “experience the film without any preconceptions.” Despite the mystery, the film became a major hit and sparked widespread discussion.

When the film was released in the U.S. in December 2023, it topped the weekend box office and went on to win multiple prestigious awards. It earned Miyazaki his second Oscar, winning Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, as well as Best Animated Film at the 81st Golden Globe Awards. It also became the highest-grossing Studio Ghibli film worldwide.

The following week, on May 9, Porco Rosso will air on Friday Road Show. Known for the iconic line, “A pig that doesn’t fly is just a pig,” this Ghibli classic blends sky-high adventure with romance and the studio’s signature charm.

In addition, to celebrate the TV premiere of How Do You Live?, a special Studio Ghibli program will air on April 29. The program will introduce the film’s story and unique characters—such as the protagonist, Mahito—along with exclusive footage. It will also reflect on Hayao Miyazaki’s remarkable career and delve into the lasting appeal of How Do You Live?.

Satoshi Yamato, who plays Masato, will appear in the Ghibli special celebrating the first broadcast of “How Do You Live?”

Also, Satoshi Yamazato, who voices the character Masato, will visit the popular Ghibli Park in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture. He’ll tour the exhibits and explore rare materials that allow visitors to fully experience the world of Studio Ghibli films.
