New voice actors have been announced for “Dive in Wonderland,” the first Japanese animated feature film based on Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland.” The voices of the protagonist Rise and the unique characters surrounding Wonderland will be provided by Matsuoka Mayu, Yamamoto Koji, Yashima Norito, Kosugi Ryuichi from “Black Mayonnaise,” Yamaguchi Kappei, Morikawa Toshiyuki, Yamamoto Takahiro, Mamiya Shotaro, and Toda Keiko.
The protagonist will be played by Hara Nanoka, who was selected to voice the protagonist in “Sparrow’s Door Lock,” and who will appear in the NHK drama series “Anpan” and the movie “Mieruko-chan” (released June 6th). She will play a life-size version of Rise, a modern college girl who tends to look at the faces of those around her and worries that nothing is going well, but one day gets lost in Wonderland.
Alice, who travels with Rise through the world of Wonderland, making various encounters with her, is played by Mica Pyu, a notable child actor who played the role of platelets in “Cells at Work”. The story begins to move when Rise meets Alice. The staff includes director Toshiya Shinohara of “From the Tomorrow of the Colorful World” and “Aquatope of White Sand”, and screenwriter Yuko Kakihara of “The Apothecary Diaries” and “Blue Box”. Animation will be produced by P.A.WORKS, known for “SHIROBAKO” and “Project SEKAI: The Movie – Broken World and Miku Who Can’t Sing”.

A new cast of voice actors has been announced, with Mamiya playing Urai Kou, the butler who invites Rise to Wonderland, and Toda playing Azumino Fumiko, Rise’s grandmother who teaches her many important things.
Familiar characters from “Alice in Wonderland” will also appear, with Matsuoka playing the Queen of Hearts, who is very popular in the original work, Yamamoto playing the Mad Hatter, Yashima playing the March Hare, and Kosugi playing Humpty Dumpty. Yamaguchi will play the White Rabbit, Morikawa playing the Cheshire Cat, and Yamamoto playing the Caterpillar.
A special trailer and teaser visuals featuring the voices of the cast were also unveiled.
“Alice in Wonderland” will be released on August 29th. The full comments from the voice actors are as follows.
[Comment from Matsuoka Mayu, the Queen of Hearts] This is Matsuoka Mayu, who plays the Queen of Hearts. Since I was a child, I have enjoyed “Alice in Wonderland” in various approaches. What would I do if I were in that situation? I have often thought about this even as an adult. Director Shinohara’s new Alice seamlessly connects us living in the modern age with Wonderland. I hope you will immerse yourself in the world and enjoy it.

[Comment from Koji Yamamoto, who plays the Mad Hatter] It’s a fantasy, a parallel world, a story like a dream I had as a child, a world I wanted to go to, but there are also mysterious strangeness and a little lesson there. I really like the world of “Alice in Wonderland”, and when I read the script this time, I thought that this world view and the current era were able to collaborate well in a straight line. Anyone can enjoy this world at any time, from any angle. I think that this is a work that will make everyone think and find answers, regardless of age or gender, so please look forward to it.

[Comment from Yashima Norito, who plays the March Hare] I think it would be a lot of work, but a lot of fun, if everyone, both children and adults, went on a journey with “Rise and Alice.” We’ll cause you a lot of trouble, but please take it all into account and go on a journey with us. That way, each viewer’s own version of “Alice in Wonderland” will be completed. It’s strange, right? Ah, but maybe that’s what “life” is. Please come and experience it in the wonderland that is the theater. I’ve been wanting to experience it ever since I recorded my voice.

[Comment from Kosugi Ryuichi (Black Mayonnaise), who plays Humpty Dumpty] When I told my family, who love Alice, that I would be participating in “Alice in Wonderland,” they were overjoyed and said, “I’m looking forward to it!” I’d be happy if everyone across the country felt the same way. I want to shout “Alice Hee-Hah!” at the stage greeting soon. If any of the stage greeting members say it, I’ll say it at home!

[Comment from Yamaguchi Kappei, the White Rabbit] When I heard about the role, I was really excited to imagine how I would play this character with a slightly mysterious picture. I thought it was comical and cute to see him using a smartphone and tablet, carrying a PC backpack, and moving around busily with his big legs flapping, and I was hoping that his voice would convey that aspect too. In the story, the White Rabbit kept talking without a break, and in one scene he played two roles, and to me, he was a very active character. As an aside, the tablet he uses is called a T(tea)-Pad, and the mark is a cute teacup. I wonder if they’ll release stickers or goods for it^^

[Comment from Morikawa Toshiyuki, the Cheshire Cat] I’m Morikawa Toshiyuki, who plays the Cheshire Cat in “Alice in Wonderland.” Since the original work is that timeless masterpiece, I felt a lot of pressure when playing the Cheshire Cat. However, I was very happy to be able to work with fresh members, and it was a valuable experience for my voice acting career. The character was very different from the Cheshire Cat I had in mind, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Please come to the theater!

[Comment from Yamamoto Takahiro, who plays the Caterpillar] I was very surprised to receive an offer to appear in such a wonderful work as “Alice in Wonderland”. Why me? It was strange~ lol. And the character I played was an interesting character that exuded a mysterious atmosphere, so I hope everyone will pay attention to that and enjoy it at the theater! I’m glad I was born on Earth to be able to experience the world of Wonderland!

[Comment from Mamiya Shotaro, who plays Urai Kou] In “Alice in Wonderland”, I voiced the role of Urai. At first, I thought I could be of some help to the main character, as I’m from the same agency as Hara Nanoka, but Nanoka’s voice expression was so wonderful that I was overwhelmed and shrank back, and in the end I felt sorry for bothering you. I’m looking forward to seeing how this timeless masterpiece beloved all over the world will be transformed into a new work.

[Comment from Toda Keiko, who plays Azumino Fumiko (Rise’s grandmother)] The colors are soft and the story is very soothing. It teaches us what is important. My role is Rise’s “grandmother.” She is a wonderful grandmother who says many good things. I want to be a grandmother like that. She is a very memorable presence for Rise. And, in any case, Alice in Wonderland is so cute. She’s so positive. I love the scene where Rise and Alice talk about what they like. I hope many people will watch it and have their hearts filled with joy.
