"CITY THE ANIMATION" produced by Kyoto Animation

KyoAni’s “CITY THE ANIMATION” adds Takehito Koyasu, Mayumi Asano and others to cast; first promotional video and theme song also announced

A special stage for the TV anime “CITY THE ANIMATION” was held at “AnimeJapan 2025,” where additional cast members including Takehito Koyasu and Mayumi Asano were announced. The first promotional video and theme song information were also released.
The original is a girls’ run comedy by Arawi Keiichi, serialized in “Morning” (published by Kodansha) from 2016 to 2021 and resumed in the same magazine in 2024. It depicts the unpredictable, ordinary lives of the unique residents, including penniless college student Nagumo Mitori (CV: Komatsu Mikako), who lives in an ordinary “CITY,” Nagumo’s junior Nikura (Toyosaki Aki), who dreams of becoming a photographer, and the slightly unusual girl Izumi Wako (Ishikawa Yui). Animation production will be handled by Kyoto Animation, which also produced the anime version of Arawi’s manga “Nichijou.”
The additional cast will play the members of the Adatara family who run the Adatara Wine liquor store next to Makabe Western Restaurant. Koyasu will play both Dr. Adatara and Adatara’s father, while Asano will play Adatara’s mother. KENN will play Adatara Tatsuta, Inomata Keiji will play Adatara Ryota, Hayashi Koko will play Adatara Kamome, Fukushima Haruna will play Adatara Umi, and Amagasaki Yuki will play Adatara Sora.

The first promotional video uses cuts from the film and includes the character voices of Nagumo, Niakura, and Wako. It has also been revealed that the music will be provided by instrumental band Piranhans, and excerpts of the songs can be heard in the video.
The opening theme will be “Hello” by Furui Riho, and the ending theme will be “LUCKY” by TOMOO.
Episode 1 will air on July 6th at midnight on TOKYO MX, at 12:40am on ABC TV, and at 1:20am on TV Aichi. It will also air on BS11 from 11pm on July 7th.
Pre-screenings of episodes 1 to 3 have also been announced for five cities across the country. The event will be held at MOVIX Kyoto and Namba Parks Cinema on May 31, MOVIX Sendai on June 14, T-Joy Hakata on June 21, and at Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo on June 8. After the screening, Komatsu, who plays Nagumo, Toyosaki, who plays Nikura, and Ishikawa, who plays Wako, will appear on stage to hold a cast talk. Tickets are available at Lawson Ticket in advance (lottery) until April 20, and cost 3,800 yen (tax included). Details of other performances will be announced at a later date.

The first concept visual produced by .MP, “GOD CARTOON,” created by the creative team “.MP,” was also released. The visual is simple yet exciting, using the “CARTOON” expression method, and will be released irregularly in the future.

[Takehito Koyasu (role of Dr. Adatara and Adatara’s father)]

I am extremely honored to have received an offer from Director Ishidate, who helped me out with “Violet Evergarden”. But this new work is a comedy? He has created such serious and beautiful works, but this one is a complete change from that, a silly piece full of gags. But it is extremely funny! By the way, I basically play two roles, Dr. Adatara and Adatara’s father, but I also play a few other roles here and there. This experience reminded me of when I was a rookie and reminded me of my roots. A wonderful and tasteful comedy? Please do check it out. You won’t be disappointed!

[Asano Mayumi (role of Adatara’s mother)]

“I wonder how they’re doing…” You suddenly think of someone. A trivial conversation makes your heart lighter. Haven’t you ever had a time like that? How are you? I’m Asano Mayumi, who played Adatara’s mother. Cooking meals is love. Giving someone a packed lunch is love. I feel happy to have become one of the residents of “CITY,” a place filled with love. Everyone, please come and join us.

I will mainly play the role of Adatara Ryota, but I will also be playing many other roles! It’s a lively everyday story with gags that have unlikely developments, but there are also heartwarming moments, and it’s a wonderful work that makes you want to keep watching the daily lives of the “CITY” characters! I hope you enjoy spending time with them.

I will be playing Adatara Ryota! My name is Inomata Keiji! I’ve loved Arai-sensei’s work since his previous work “Nichijou”, so I’m really happy to be able to participate in this work! The dubbing session is always so much fun, the tension of recording together…the tension of having to hold back laughter…the tension of wondering how to express this comedy…it’s a real test!! Please look forward to the broadcast of “CITY THE ANIMATION”, which is full of Arai-sensei’s unique style!!

[Hayashi Koko (role of Adatara Kamome)]

I’m Hayashi Koko, who plays Adatara Kamome. I’m really happy to be a part of the lively, fun, and warm “CITY THE ANIMATION”. Dubbing is also so much fun! The story spun by Arai-sensei, the characters dancing on screen, the love of the staff, the acting of the cast… I really feel like I’m witnessing the perfect moment when everything comes together. I can’t wait to share this hilarious story with everyone! Please be sure to watch!

My name is Fukushima Haruna, and I will be playing the role of Adatara Umi! I am very honored to have the opportunity to appear as a member of “CITY” in Arawi Keiichi’s work. Every episode of this series is so funny that I struggled to contain my laughter during dubbing! I’m sure that everyone watching will have a smile on their face as they watch the fun and smiling lives of the eccentric residents of “CITY”! Please look forward to the humorous world of “CITY”!

My name is Amami Yuuki and I will be playing the role of Adatara Sora. I am really happy to be involved in a work filled with Arai-sensei’s world. I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to work on Kyoto Animation’s first new anime in about six years. “CITY THE ANIMATION” is a work that many people have been looking forward to and have been waiting for. I also wrote the theme song “Hello” with the feeling of “reunion” in mind. I look forward to joining hands with everyone, thinking of joy and smiles, and seeing this wonderful work known as “CITY THE ANIMATION” take flight into the world.

While reading “CITY,” I had been laughing out loud just moments before, but suddenly an indescribable emotion welled up inside me, and I found myself humming along to the tune at the piano, which became the melody for the chorus. I really love the people in this town. I wrote “LUCKY” wishing I could be here, and feeling glad I met them. I hope that I can add color to the lingering impression that their daily lives continue even after the weekly stories. I’m really looking forward to the broadcast!

Since Piranhans was my first time composing and arranging a soundtrack, the process was full of twists and turns and many difficulties. What I ended up doing was to do everything I could with Piranhans from start to finish, then have the anime production side listen to it and give me their instructions. Therefore, this soundtrack contains everything about Piranhans from start to finish. I hope you enjoy listening to it.
