Kenta Shinohara’s original work, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) since 2021, is a popular slapstick comedy manga with a cumulative circulation of over 3 million copies. It depicts the turbulent life of Nico Wakatsuki (Rina Kawaguchi), a young girl training to become a witch, and her childhood friend Morihito Otogi (Ryota Suzuki), a high school student with demonic powers. The TV anime series has been airing for two consecutive seasons since April of this year.

Miharu, played by Wakai, is the only son of the Kiryu family, an old acquaintance of Nico’s mother. He is a bat familiar and a vampire who requires the ability to suck out life force. Azagami plays Rui, the student council president at Miharu’s junior high school. She has a strong sense of justice and advises Miharu, who often stands out, to be careful not to attract the attention of delinquents.

The opening theme song for the second season has been decided to be “Toki na Hanate!” sung by singer-songwriter Hashimero. This newly written song is his first anime tie-in song and will be included on his major label debut EP, released on August 27th. The ending theme will be “Tsuki to Watashi no Kakurenbo” (Hide and Seek with the Moon and My Childhood) by the four-member rock band “yutori.”

The voice-over trailer for the second season begins with Keigo Shinkami, a werewolf who became a key character at the end of the first season, living with Nico as her third familiar at the Otogi household. The trailer also includes scenes of Morihito and his friends meeting Miharu in the lush suburbs, where they visit in accordance with a prophecy to “seek an ancient familiar who can exorcise evil,” Nico and her friends playing in the river in swimsuits, and Morihito kissing Nico on the cheek.

The visual for the second season shows a total of six people gathered at the entrance of the Otogi household: Nico, Morihito, Kazamatsuri Kanji (Amasaki Kohei), Keigo, who has recently joined the Otogi household, Miyao Nemu (Kusunoki Tomori) in cat form, and Miharu.

Q1. What do you think is the appeal of this work? I love the characters’ expressive dialogue, which always feels like they’re performing a comedy skit. I’ve been laughing out loud since I first read the manga! The dialogue and timing are even clearer in the anime, making it even more enjoyable! From romantic comedy scenes that will make even girls’ hearts flutter, to sometimes serious, cool battle scenes, I think this work is packed with exciting elements that will excite anyone! !

Q2. What did you pay attention to or what did you pay attention to when playing Miharu Kiryu? Miharu has a bit of a foul mouth, so at first glance she may seem rude, but she’s a truly charming girl who you can’t hate, like everyone’s cute little brother. I tried to play her without any ill intentions, and to make her a lovable character. Also, in comedy scenes, she can play both the straight man and the funny man, so as a comedy fan, I thought about how to make the exchanges even more entertaining (laughs)!

Q1. What is the appeal of this work? The well-paced gags, ranging from intense to surreal, are incredibly satisfying. The occasional serious episodes and heartwarming scenes further strengthen my attachment to each character. Personally, the worldview was fresh, and I was thrilled to become a resident of this world!

Q2. What were some of the things you kept in mind or paid attention to when playing Fujiki Rui? First of all, I was prepared for the role to be a “middle school student” younger than Otogi and the others. My voice doesn’t often sound like a middle school student. However, by keeping his personality and worldview in mind and focusing on the dialogue with Miharu, I didn’t have much difficulty with the age. More than anything, I struggled to find the right balance to capture the usually serious Rui’s lively moments with her tsukkomi and boke. I hope that this is conveyed well to fans.

[Hashimero (Opening Theme Song)]

I’m Hashimero, and I’ve been tasked with writing the opening theme for the second season of the TV anime “Witch Watch.” This is the first time in my life that I’ve been given the opportunity to write a theme song for an anime, and I’m very happy about that. I took in the atmosphere of “Witch Watch” to the fullest and gave it my own form with “Toki natte!” Magic is a mysterious power, and anyone can use technology as long as they follow the proper steps. But love isn’t like that. There’s an unpredictability to it, and that’s why I feel like it has the same atmosphere as magic. I hope that your time watching Witch Watch will be a moment when you can let your emotions flow freely!

[yutori (ending theme song)]

My name is Yutori and I will be performing the ending theme for the second season of “Witch Watch” titled “Hide and Seek with the Moon.” In our everyday lives, we find joy and happiness. And we may also fall in love. “Hide and Seek with the Moon” was written with a focus on such life. It depicts the hectic daily life at the Otogi household, brought about by Wakatsuki Nico’s magic. And her love for Otogi Morihito. The frustration of not being able to convey it. The awkwardness of not noticing. I likened the situation between Nico, who struggles, and Morihito, who is insensitive, to a game of hide and seek. I hope that one day, Morihito will understand Nico’s honest feelings. Please enjoy the song until the ending.
