This moving film follows the growth of a lonely boy named Elio as he journeys across the galaxy, connecting stars with one another, and encounters that change his destiny. The film is co-directed by Madeline Sharafian, who served as story artist on “Coco,” Domee Shi, director of “Sometimes a Red Panda,” and Adrian Molina, who served as writer and co-director on “Coco.”

“Space Brothers,” a popular manga serialized in Kodansha’s Morning magazine since 2007, has been adapted into an anime and a live-action film, and has sold over 31 million copies. The latest volume, 45, was released on July 23, and it was announced that the series will conclude with the next volume. The film tells the story of two brothers, Mutta and Hibito, who, inspired by a UFO they saw as children, promised to pursue their dream of becoming astronauts while gazing at the starry sky.

The special visual, created by Koyama, the creator of “Space Brothers,” depicts Mutta and Hibito pursuing their dreams of space, as well as Elio, lost in thought while gazing at the beautiful starry sky. It also features a famous line from “Space Brothers,” “We are lonely, but we are not alone,” which overlaps with the message depicted in “Elio, a Chain of Stars.”

Koyama commented, “These are words spoken by the character Eddie in Space Brothers, reflecting on his own situation, but I wanted them to also reach someone listening from afar. I hope that by combining them with this collaborative illustration, they will be able to reach even more people.”

The special video includes memorable scenes from “Elio, a Chain of Stars” and famous scenes from the “Space Brothers” manga, and depicts Mutta’s childhood longing for space, his struggles with not being understood by those around him, his encounter with important “connections” who believe in him, and the beautiful scenery he was able to reach by sticking to what he loves.

●About this special visual

By flattening Elio in a 3D world using the same manga-style art as Space Brothers, the image feels more familiar and intimate when placed side by side. The composition of characters from different worlds looking at the same moon was very dreamy and fun to draw.

●The meaning behind Eddie’s words, “We are lonely, but not alone”

In “Space Brothers,” the character Eddie speaks these words out of his own situation, but I wanted them to reach someone listening from afar. I believe that by combining them with this collaborative illustration, their words will reach even more people.

Impressions and memories of Pixar films: I have many favorites, but “Monsters, Inc.” and “Wall-E” are my favorites. I think it’s amazing how the emotions of not only the human characters, but also the monsters and robots, are conveyed so clearly through their movements and expressions. Even someone with only one eye like Mike can tell emotions…! I’m having fun learning at the same time.

A Celestial Collaboration That Bridges Dreams and Space

The collaboration between Hoshi-nagi no Erio and Space Brothers is more than just a visual treat—it’s a symbolic fusion of two narratives that celebrate aspiration, exploration, and the cosmos. Chuya Koyama’s involvement adds authenticity and emotional depth, especially as his art often emphasizes the human element within space travel. By connecting the emotional core of Erio’s quiet, starry world with the passionate journey of the Nanba brothers, this visual crossover captures the shared longing for something beyond Earth. It’s a tribute to imagination itself—a reminder that the stars are always within reach for those who dare to look up.
