The August 1-3 domestic movie rankings (national weekend box office results, provided by Kogyo Tsushinsha) have been announced, with “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Castle Arc Chapter 1: Akaza Returns” drawing 1,739,600 viewers and grossing ¥2.457 billion over the three-day weekend of its third weekend in release, maintaining its top spot for the third consecutive week. With a cumulative total of 12.55 million viewers and over ¥17.6 billion in gross revenue, it has already ranked 10th in Japan’s all-time box office rankings. Starting on the 2nd, the “Third Key Visual Illustration Board” (A5 size) was distributed nationwide to a limited audience of 3 million people (while supplies last) (for the standard, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema versions), and the Dolby Cinema version began screening on the same day.

Among the new releases released on the 1st, “Tokyo Mer: The Movie – The Mobile Emergency Room – Nankai Mission” debuted at No. 2. “National Treasure” came in third, and Disney & Pixar’s latest animated feature, “Elio the Lost,” started off in No. 4.

In No. 5 was “Haunted Property: The Scary Layout,” in No. 6 was “Fantastic 4: First Step,” and in No. 7 was “Kamen Rider Gab: The Movie – Invaders of the Candy House” (shown in a double feature with “Number One Sentai Gojuger: The Movie – Resurrection of Tega Sword”), with “F1(R)” re-emerging in No. 8.

Then there’s “Army on the Tree” in No. 9 and “Lilo & Stitch” in No. 10.

“Mugen Castle Arc Chapter 1” Dominates with ¥17.6 Billion; “Elio of the Lost Stars” Debuts at No. 4

Demon Slayer continues its unstoppable momentum at the box office, with “Mugen Castle Arc Chapter 1” surpassing 17.6 billion yen in revenue—a testament to its enduring popularity and strong fanbase. Despite being part of a long-running series, the film’s performance proves that audiences are still deeply invested in the story of Tanjiro and his companions. Meanwhile, “Elio of the Lost Stars” managed a respectable 4th place debut, showing promise as a rising contender in the anime film landscape. With the fall season approaching, it will be interesting to see how upcoming titles compete in an already crowded market.
