Stills and the official trailer for JUNK WORLD, a sci-fi stop-motion animation directed by JUNK HEAD’s Takahide Hori, have been revealed.
The film marks the second entry in the “JUNK” series and was produced over a period of about three years. Hori once again took on nearly all aspects of production, including directing, scriptwriting, filming, lighting, and editing.
Set 1,042 years before the events of JUNK HEAD, JUNK WORLD explores the origins of its universe. The previous film gained global acclaim, winning several international awards, such as Best Animated Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Upon its release in just 10 theaters across Japan in 2021, strong word of mouth helped it expand to more theaters, eventually grossing over 140 million yen.

The humans and Mulligan set out to investigate a mysterious phenomenon occurring in the deep underground city of Karpbaal—once thought to be a deserted ghost town. Meanwhile, Robin, a robot, fights to protect Tris, the human female captain, as her loyal bodyguard.

In the trailer, the investigation team—led by Triss, captain of the human side, and Dante, the original being leading Mulligan’s group—presses on with their mission despite fierce attacks from the cult known as “Gyulaism.” The film features Japanese voice acting, hinting at a more expansive production scale than the previous installment. JUNK WORLDis set to be released on June 13.
