A Revival Screening of Studio Ghibli’s “Ocean Waves” to Run for Three Weeks Starting July 4
A special three-week theatrical run of Ocean Waves, a TV movie produced by Studio Ghibli, will begin on July 4 across 139 theaters nationwide.
Originally aired as a TV special in 1993, Ocean Waves is based on the novel by Saeko Himuro, which was serialized in Animage magazine (published by Tokuma Shoten). The film was created by a young team at Studio Ghibli and directed by Tomomi Mochizuki, known for his work on Maison Ikkoku: The Final Chapter.
Set in both Kōchi and Tokyo, the story follows the coming-of-age experiences of three teenagers. Taku Morisaki (voiced by Nobuo Tobita), now a university student in Tokyo, spots someone who looks like Rikako Muto (voiced by Yoko Sakamoto) — a girl he believed had enrolled at a local university — on a train platform in Kichijoji. As he boards a plane back to his hometown in Kōchi, Taku recalls the bittersweet memories of his youth, starting from his first encounter with Rikako two years earlier.
The film has not been made available on streaming services, but it received positive feedback during a limited screening in Tokyo in 2024. This upcoming nationwide screening offers fans a rare opportunity to experience Ocean Waves on the big screen.

This nationwide screening is part of the “Filmarks Revival” project, planned and organized by Filmarks, a popular review platform for movies, dramas, and anime. To celebrate the first-ever nationwide screening of Ocean Waves, special admission bonuses and promotional events are also in the works.
Participating cinemas include major locations such as Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo, Namba Parks Cinema in Osaka, Midland Square Cinema in Aichi, Sapporo Cinema Frontier in Hokkaido, and Kokura Corona Cinema World in Fukuoka. Additional theaters are expected to be announced in a second wave.
Ticket prices are set at 1,600 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for high school students and younger.
