Director Suzuki Tatsuya, whose short animation “MAHOROBA”, which he produced on his own during the COVID-19 pandemic, won the Special Jury Prize at the Pia Film Festival, has announced the 10 main cast members of his feature debut “Anonymous Life”, which he spent a year and a half working on alone.
Following the star rapper ACE COOL, the cast members revealed this time are Tanaka Ito, Uno Shohei, Nekobe Tsubaki, Cheng Reimi, Kamataki Eri, Nishino Ryotaro, Nakajima Ayumu, Maikuma Katsuya, Ohashi Miho, and Tsuda Kanji. The cast, which includes talented actors, freelance announcers, comedians, and others from different generations and fields, are mostly inexperienced voice actors, but they resonated with the director’s solitary work and unique style, and decided to appear in the film.

In “MAHOROBA,” a man working for a black company tries to escape, and in the sequel “Lawless Love,” the relationship between an outcast man and woman is at the center, and the film also focuses on a random stabbing incident that occurred in real life. Director Suzuki has consistently portrayed “the way of life of those who live in an absurd world” with cynical depictions. “Anonymous” is the story of a lonely boy who is bullied and lives in Sendai, who follows in his father’s footsteps and aims to become an idol.

The trailer begins with the main character crouching in a concrete pipe. He can’t fit in with the people around him, and his classmates look down on him, saying, “He’s different from everyone else. He doesn’t talk, he doesn’t move, and he’s really creepy.” The main character is impressed by an idol he saw on TV, and decides to become an idol. He is finally able to debut as a six-person group, and says, “I want to be an idol who can make a lot of people smile,” and seems to be moving forward toward his dream, but then he suddenly hits someone with a microphone and spits out, “That’s stupid.” The copy on the screen reads, “Live to the point of death.” The animation is free-flowing, and also features a person dressed in armor reminiscent of Iron Man and a warlord who appears to be Oda Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple.
This work depicts the turbulent 100-year life of the protagonist, who was called by many names, including derogatory names and stage names, from birth to death, in 10 chapters against the backdrop of many social issues currently facing the world, such as incidents involving elderly drivers, the dark side of the entertainment industry, the unexpected deaths of young people, and war. In addition, the work does not prepare a script, and the touch and color change for each chapter, making it an animation that viewers will not tire of.

“Anonymous Life” trailer
“Anonymous Life” will be released nationwide from May 16th at Shinjuku Musashinokan and other theaters. The full comments from the main cast are as follows.
■Tanaka Ito (role of Kin) I’m Tanaka Ito, who played the role of Kanemitsu Kintaro. I heard that this work was written by Director Suzuki himself over many years, one page at a time, and I was expecting that it would have a new world different from previous animations with his passion. In the midst of all this, I was entrusted with the role of Kin-chan, who is very important to the main character, and I tried my best to convey the directors’ passion, even though it was my first time as a voice actor! I relied on ACE’s straightforward voice, which is quiet yet powerful, and faced Kin-chan on the screen! It’s a work that has an infinite number of emotions depending on the viewer, so please watch it over and over again, think about it, and find your own answer.
■Shohei Uno (role of Hiroshi) Director Ryuya Suzuki gives a very gentle impression, but this film “Anonymous Life” is a challenging and tricky one, as if everything that had been building up inside of him had suddenly come out. I hope you will all watch it at the theater.
■Tsubaki Nekobe (role of Kin Mama) The director’s almost obsessive enthusiasm, who completed almost all of the production of this film by himself, and the pleasure of being taken to an incredible place towards the end! When the spectacular end credits finished, I muttered from the bottom of my heart, “Thank you for your hard work!”… I’m looking forward to seeing this controversial film that came out of Sendai (the director’s family home and the production location of this film) at the theater♡
■Lingmi Cheng (role of Hime) At a time when things weren’t going well, I recorded a voice memo in a slightly sulky mood, and I never thought that it would lead to me being able to participate in such a big film… You never know what will happen in life. The uneasy feelings of isolation and the frustration I felt at random moments were sublimated by the familiar images and original development, and by the time the credits rolled, I felt like I was being pushed from a direction I had never been pushed before. I would be very happy if you could encounter it. I hope it reaches far and wide.
■Kamataki Eri (voice of Yoko)I have always loved Suzuki Ryoya’s work. I can’t help but love every work he has made so far, and I think I will continue to be a fan. Although we were only on set for a short time, the voice direction was precise and careful, and above all, I felt a sense of trust in the director’s humanity that seeped into the story and images. I am very proud to have been involved in “Anonymous Life” in my life. It was an animation filled with things I had never seen before. I hope everyone enjoys it. ■Nakajima Ayumu (role of Scum)The movies I usually work on are made with a lot of different people saying different things, but this one was made by Suzuki Ryoya all by himself. What is this? Is this guy okay? With that thought in mind, I decided to participate, even though it was a small contribution. It is entering a unique realm that can only be achieved by one person. I’m sure that the movie will be an experience that gives you a glimpse into the mind of one person at the cinema. Please come to the cinema.
■Maikuma Katsuya (role of Yamato)Along with the script, I was sent a silent animation before dubbing. With its unique touch and worldview, I was interested in what this work is trying to convey… and I participated. It is a somewhat sad and sharp work, and it may be something that you can only challenge if you are independent. Please enjoy the world of Suzuki Ryoya.
■Ohashi Miho (role of Sakura)When I read the script, I really liked the last line, so I really wanted to appear in it. Afterwards, Director Suzuki told me that he himself had a favorite male idol, and I hoped I could touch the love of a loved one. At the same time, I wanted to imprint on my body through Sakura not “information” but “human emotional wounds”. I hope this work will be a ray of light for everyone as we live in a grotesque reality.
■Tsuda Kanji (role of Shiratori) I was so honored to receive an offer from Director Suzuki saying, “I hate this character the most out of all the characters you’ve created, but can you play him?” I don’t know if I was able to answer the director’s love letter, but I did my best. A long, long time between people, spun in a portrait that has been stripped down to the bare minimum… A story that may go down in film history, but is still unknown. Please enjoy it at the cinema.
