Weekend Anime Movie Rankings: Top 10

The domestic movie rankings for June 27-29 (nationwide weekend box office results, provided by Kogyo Tsushinsha) have been announced, with five new works ranked in, but “National Treasure,” directed by Lee Sang-il and starring Ryo Yoshizawa and Ryusei Yokohama, topped the list for the second consecutive week. In second place was the new movie “F1 (R) F1,” which made its debut, and “Lilo & Stitch” came in third.

“Dollhouse” kept its fourth place. In fifth place was the new movie “Fabrication: The Man Called Murderous Teacher,” in sixth place was “Frontline,” and “Mission: Impossible: Final Reckoning” came in seventh.

The new movie “Soreike! Anpanman Chapon no Hero!” started in eighth place. This is the 36th movie version of “Soreike! Anpanman”, an anime created by picture book author Yanase Takashi, depicting the exploits of Anpanman, a hero for children. Guest appearances by Aoi Yu, comedy trio “Panther” (Mukai Satoshi, Ogata Takahiro, Suga Ryotaro), and Shizu-chan from “Nankai Candies” were made. As an admission bonus, “100 times more energy! Cheer maracas” (limited to elementary school students and younger) were distributed.

The new movie “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: The Lonely Dragon” debuted at 9th place. Based on a comic by manga artist Cool Kyou Shinja, this movie version of the popular TV anime produced by Kyoto Animation depicts the interspecies communication between humans and the dragon girl Tohru who works as a maid at the home of office worker Kobayashi. Singer Kobayashi Sachiko not only performs the ending theme song, but also voices the character. As an admission bonus for the first week, one of six “mini-colored paper drawn by character designer Kadowaki Mirai” was distributed at random.

The new film “LUPIN THE IIIRD THE MOVIE: Immortal Bloodline” started off in 10th place. It is a film adaptation of the popular anime “Lupin the Third” series, based on the original work by Monkey Punch. It is one of the “LUPIN THE IIIRD” series directed by Takeshi Koike, known for his hard-boiled style and stylish direction, and is the first completely new 2D animated film in the “Lupin the Third” series since “Lupin the Third: Dead or Alive” released in 1996. Kataoka Ainosuke and Morikawa Aoi participated as guest voice actors, and the theme song was written by “B’z”. As an admission bonus, a “Confidential Art Collection of LUPIN THE IIIRD THE MOVIE: Immortal Bloodline” was distributed.

In addition, “Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed Flashback”, which is in its 11th week of release, is in 11th place.
