It Was a Match. A Lady Doesn’t Play Fighting Games is an anime adaptation of the manga by Eri Ejima, serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper. Set in a prestigious all-girls’ school, the story revolves around secret, high-stakes fighting game battles among wealthy students. The manga has published eight volumes and was also adapted into a live-action drama on NTT Docomo’s “Lemino” in 2023.
Aya Mizuki, a commoner who transfers to an elite school for rich girls, admires Mio Yae—nicknamed “Shirayuri-sama”—the most admired student on campus. One day, Aya accidentally discovers Mio secretly playing a fighting game in an empty classroom. To her surprise, Mio also realizes that Aya is a skilled fighting gamer. Despite the school’s strict no-gaming rule, the two decide to clash. Thus begins the secret and passionate fighting game life of the elite girls.

TV anime “Taiari Deshita. ~Ojou-sama wa Kakutou Geki Nante Shinai~” teaser PV
The anime will be featured at EVO Japan 2025, Japan’s largest fighting game event, starting May 9. A new teaser PV has also been released, showcasing a heated in-game battle between the main characters, Aya Mizuki (voiced by Ikumi Hasegawa) and Mio Yae (voiced by Kana Ichinose). It has been revealed that the game they’re playing is Street Fighter 6by Capcom, which will be featured in an official collaboration within the anime.

Details about the anime’s production staff have also been revealed. The director is Shota Ibata, known for his work on Kamonohashi Ron’s Forbidden Deductions and Girlish Number. Animation production will be handled by Diomedea, which has worked on popular titles such as The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady.
It was also announced that Ayaka Senbongi will voice Yuu Inui, and Shino Shimoji will voice Tamaki Ichinose. Both cast members have shared comments expressing their enthusiasm for the series.
To commemorate the announcement, a giveaway will be held featuring teaser visual posters autographed by Senbongi and Shimoji—fans are encouraged to apply!
