The anime film is based on the manga by Taizan 5, originally serialized on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ app from December 2021 to March 2022. The story follows Tacopi, a cheerful alien who arrives on Earth to spread happiness. He uses his mysterious “happy gadgets” in an attempt to bring back the smile of Shizuka Kuze, a fourth-grade girl leading a troubled life. The original manga was ranked third in the “This Manga is Amazing! 2023” (Men’s Edition), and the two compiled volumes have surpassed 1.45 million copies in circulation.

The newly released main visual features Tacopi, Shizuka, and classmates Marina and Azuma gathered in a park surrounded by colorful ribbons. The official promotional video includes clips from both the opening and ending themes.

Comments from the theme song artists have also been released.

[ano (opening theme)]

I wrote the opening theme for “Tacopi no Gensin.” Having read the original manga, I deeply empathized with its heavy and painful themes, which made it quite a challenge to transform those feelings into a song. I drew inspiration from my own middle school days—when the world around me felt devoid of color—and how that sense of emptiness still lingers even now. Through this song, I hope to bring a bit of comfort to those watching the anime, especially to anyone who finds it hard to ask for help or express their true feelings. I’m really looking forward to watching it myself.

[Tele (Ending Theme)]

I can’t help but relate to the existence of Tacopi. In a way, music itself is like a “happy tool.” Every time I reread the manga, I feel a strong urge to say, “I understand.” That ache of not fully understanding anything, yet still feeling, “I just want to save you. I want to help you.” Reaching out to someone you can’t see—that’s one of the hardest things to do.

That’s why I wrote this song. I hoped that, just for the duration of the song, people could breathe a little easier—not just Tacopi, but everyone in this story. All the characters feel like they’re gasping for air, like fish starved of oxygen. All I could do for them was to write this song.

I composed it like writing a letter to someone I used to know. I’m truly honored to have been part of a work that stirred such deep feelings in me. Thank you so much.

Tacopi no Gensin” Brings Emotional Depth Through Music and Message

The upcoming anime adaptation of Tacopi no Gensin promises not just a visually captivating experience, but one deeply intertwined with emotional storytelling and expressive music. Both theme song artists—ano and Tele—have provided deeply personal insights into their creative processes, showing how the manga’s themes of pain, isolation, and the desperate desire to save someone resonate beyond the pages.

Ano’s reflection on her own colorless school days reveals how universal the feeling of loneliness can be, especially during adolescence. Meanwhile, Tele’s poignant statement likening music to a “happy tool” emphasizes the power of sound as a medium of empathy. His metaphor of characters “gasping for air like fish” paints a vivid emotional landscape that mirrors the suffocating world the characters live in.

This isn’t just another sci-fi tale about an alien trying to spread joy. It’s a brutally honest exploration of the human psyche—one that uses the surreal to highlight the painfully real. The emotional weight of the series, amplified by these music artists’ interpretations, may set Tacopi no Gensin apart as one of this year’s most soul-stirring short anime series.
