New Character in “Gundam Zeke Axe” Sparks Buzz: “Wish I’d Seen This in Theaters!” [Spoiler Alert]

Episode 4 of the latest Gundam anime, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX (Zeke Axe), titled “Witch’s War,” aired on the Nippon TV network on the 30th.

New characters made their debut in this episode, sparking lively reactions online such as, “Wait, the Witch, Sugai Shiiko (did I hear that right?), is actually a mother?”, “I can’t believe someone like Professor Mosque Han is being compared to Fuyutsuki,” “What?! Was that really a Gelgoog?”, and “I wish I could’ve watched this in theaters too.”

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl living a peaceful life in a space colony, who becomes entangled in an underground mobile suit dueling competition known as “Clan Battles” after meeting a war refugee girl named Nyaan.

Amate, who goes by the entry name “Machu,” pilots the GQuuuuuuX and throws herself into intense battles day after day. One day, a mysterious mobile suit known only as “Gundam” appears before her—pursued by both the space military and the police. Alongside it is its pilot, a young boy named Shuuji. As their paths cross, the world teeters on the edge of a new era.

This new Gundam series is a co-production between Studio Khara, known for the Evangelion series, and Sunrise, the longtime studio behind the Gundam franchise.

The film is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, known for the 2021 installment of the Evangelion: New Theatrical Editionseries, with series composition by Yoji Enokido and mechanical design by Ikuto Yamashita—bringing together an all-star creative team. Tomoyo Kurosawa voices the protagonist, Amate Yuzuriha (Machu), while Yui Ishikawa plays Nyaan and Shimba Tsuchiya voices Shuuji Ito.
