The film “Bambi: The Reckoning”, a live-action version of the classic children’s literature “Bambi: Life in the Woods” in which the fawn is transformed into a ferocious monster, will be released on August 29th under the Japanese title “Fawn Zombie”. A special trailer and still photos were also unveiled.
The timeless animation masterpiece “Bambi” produced in 1942, which revolutionized feature-length animated films. The original work is the classic children’s literature “Bambi: Life in the Woods” published by Austrian author Felix Salten in 1923, and is a coming-of-age story that depicts the harsh world of wild animals fighting against the threats of humans and nature. The world-famous best-selling author Stephen King has said, “Bambi, which had the greatest influence on me in my childhood, is the origin of my terrifying experiences and imagination.”
In this new interpretation of the timeless classic Animated Series, the image of pure and innocent Bambi is completely destroyed, as he attacks humans using his muscular, gigantic body and sharp horns and fangs as lethal weapons. Once you encounter a ruthless monster zombie, there is no escaping it… This film depicts the horror of this encounter.
In the trailer recently released, a fawn appears, straddling the belly of an overturned car, with a ferocious appearance, in a vast, lush forest shrouded in darkness. It is no longer a fawn, but a mad beast, Bambi, with the face of a demon. Why was this fawn, transformed into a monster, born into this world? The video builds expectations.
The film will be released nationwide from August 29th, including Shinjuku Piccadilly.

A twisted take on innocence: When cuteness turns to horror
“Baby Fawn Zombie” plays on our nostalgic image of innocent forest creatures, turning that comfort into fear. By corrupting the symbol of gentleness—an adorable baby deer—the film taps into a modern trend of reimagining classic childhood icons as horror figures. This project seems to follow in the footsteps of films like Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, reflecting both the horror genre’s appetite for shock value and audiences’ curiosity for dark reinterpretations. It will be interesting to see whether this film offers more than just grotesque visuals—perhaps a satire on lost innocence, or a commentary on how media reshapes our childhood perceptions.
