The original work by Yukinobu Tatsu is an occult battle manga currently being serialized on Shueisha’s manga app “Shonen Jump+,” with a cumulative circulation of over 10 million copies. The story follows Momo Ayase (aka Momo, voiced by Shion Wakayama), a girl born into a family of mediums who awakens to her psychic powers, and Ken Takakura (aka Okarun, voiced by Natsuki Hanae), an occult enthusiast who gains the ability to transform thanks to the curse of the yokai Turbo Granny (Mayumi Tanaka), as they tackle mysterious cases. The first 12-episode TV anime series aired from October to December 2024, with the second season currently airing this July.

Fujiwara plays Kinta, a sci-fi nerd and Okarun’s classmate. He explores why the unimpressive Okarun is so close to the beautiful girls Momo and Shiratori Aira (aka Aira/Sakura Ayane). He will be a key figure in the climax of the second season.

The climax trailer shows the group becoming embroiled in a battle with a space monster after Kinta learns information about the “Golden Ball” through his involvement with Okarun. The retro-style second key visual depicts Okarun and his friends gazing up at a giant robot towering over the city and what appears to be a monster grappling with each other, with Kinta’s face emerging in the background.

Q1. What is the appeal of this work? When I first read it, I was struck by the beauty and power of the illustrations. The story has an exquisite balance of serious and comical elements, and I absolutely love the little jokes scattered throughout. And above all, the depth of the characters is truly amazing. Their backstories and psychological descriptions are meticulous, and each character is truly lively. I think this is a very fascinating work.

Q2. What did you keep in mind when playing Kinta Sakata? Kinta is a true otaku, as both himself and others would agree. I think he has unwavering convictions and passion, and a strong resolve that doesn’t succumb to loneliness. First of all, I tried to preserve that nobility. Also, Kinta’s narcissism, his passionate talk about the things he likes, and his yelling when people around him treat him badly – his roller coaster-like emotional changes are what make him so appealing, so I kept that in mind when I played the role.
