It has been announced that the ending theme for the MAPPA-produced animated film “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” will be “JANE DOE,” a collaboration between Kenshi Yonezu and Hikaru Utada. Yonezu will write the lyrics and compose the music, while Utada will perform the vocals.

A teaser video featuring the intro to “JANE DOE” has also been released.

The film is based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga “Chainsaw Man,” currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. Denji, a devil hunter struggling with poverty, transforms into Chainsaw Man, possessing the heart of a demon, and engages in a life-or-death battle with demons. “Reze Arc,” a sequel to the TV anime version scheduled to air in 2022, will tell a new story beginning with Denji’s encounter with the mysterious girl Reze.

The single “IRIS OUT / JANE DOE,” featuring the theme song “IRIS OUT” by Yonezu and the ending theme “JANE DOE” by Yonezu and Utada, will be released on September 24th. The full comments from Yonezu and Utada are below.

[Kenshi Yonezu] I started writing this song without really thinking about who I wanted to sing it, but as I worked on it, I felt that only Utada could sing it, so I just offered her the song. I remember being so overwhelmed by her voice, which is melancholic yet sweeping like the wind, that I was left breathless. As a music creator, I am truly honored by this opportunity.

[Hikaru Utada] When I received the offer, I wasn’t sure what would happen, but I really wanted to give it a try, so I took it on. As singer-songwriters who both pursue their own individuality, we understand each other better than anyone else, but we were confused by the contrasting ways of expression, and as we groped our way forward, I hope that viewers can see a new side of each of us emerge.
