GATE Season 2: JSDF Maritime Battles

Season 2 to be animated

The production of a new TV anime “GATE” “GATE SEASON 2: Thus the JSDF Fought There” has been decided, and the main staff and concept visuals have been released.

The anime “GATE” is based on a light novel by Takumi Yanai, which has sold over 7.3 million copies in total. In the previous work “GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There”, which aired in 2025, a “gate” to another world appeared in Ginza, Tokyo, and the otaku JSDF officer Itami Youji and others fought against monsters that poured in through the gate and advanced to the other side of the gate.

The first new work in about 10 years, “GATE SEASON 2: Thus the JSDF Fought There” depicts the exploits of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on the vast ocean of another world. The main staff includes director Toru Takahashi (director of “Inari Kon Kon Koi Iroha” and director of “Chihayafuru 3”), series composition and scriptwriting by Tatsuhiko Urahata, who continues from the previous work. Character design is by Shigeru Fujita (MONSTER, PLUTO, Summer Wars), and animation production will be handled by Studio M2 instead of A-1 Pictures, who was in charge of the previous work. As with the previous work, Genco will also participate as a producing partner (they participated in the previous work as producers).

The story is a world spun with every stroke of the pen, with all my heart and soul. I am indescribably grateful to the production team who breathe life into it with the power of pictures, sounds, and voices.

“GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There,” produced by Director Naohiko Kyogoku and A-1 Pictures, is a memorable work that has become a hot topic, not only for those who like military things, but also for those who don’t.

This time, the stage will move from land to sea. And Studio M2 will take over the baton with new staff. “GATE SEASON 2: Thus the JSDF Fought There” is currently being produced as a team, with the cooperation of the Maritime Self-Defense Force in the research! !

It’s already been 10 years since the TV broadcast of the anime “GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There.”

During that time, together with the original author, Takumi Yanai, we have been taking one step at a time steps towards realizing the second season of the anime. We would not have been able to get this far without the enthusiastic support and long-standing support of our fans.

And finally, we are able to officially announce the decision to produce a second season of the anime “GATE”!

In this work, “GATE SEASON 2: Thus the JSDF Fought There,” the “sea” is an important theme as a new setting. In order to pursue realism and detailed depictions in an overwhelming fantasy worldview of a different world, we conducted extensive interviews with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. All of our staff are working hard to create a visual experience that vividly transcends the boundaries between fantasy and reality.

Please look forward to the new battle, where these three elements – humanity, another world, and the JSDF – intersect again, with even greater scale and drama.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force Sets Sail in a New Dimension

The long-awaited second season of GATE has finally been confirmed, and this time, the spotlight shifts from the Ground Self-Defense Force to the Maritime Self-Defense Force. While the first season explored the clash between modern military might and fantasy civilizations on land, Season 2 promises to expand the scale by introducing naval operations in the unfamiliar seas of the other world. This move not only adds tactical variety but also reflects Japan’s real-world military dynamics in anime form. Fans can expect thrilling sea battles, diplomatic tensions, and perhaps even underwater creatures unique to this new realm. It’s not just a sequel — it’s an escalation.
