The latest anime adaptation is based on the cyberpunk sci-fi manga “Ghost in the Shell” by Masamune Shirow, published in 1989. Animation will be produced by Science SARU, the studio behind “Dandadan,” and Mokochan, who served as assistant director on the previous work, will be taking on the directorial challenge for the first time. Novelist Enjo Toh, who worked on “Godzilla Singular Point,” will be involved in the series composition and scriptwriting.
Sorayama is an illustrator known for his “Sexy Robot” series, which was released in 1978 and incorporated the beauty of the female body into robots. In 1999, he worked on the concept design for the entertainment robot “AIBO” developed by Sony, and in 2001, his illustrations were used on the cover of rock band Aerosmith’s album “Just Push Play.” In February of this year, he held his largest retrospective exhibition to date, “Light, Transparency, Reflection,” in Shanghai.
The title logo and other details were announced at the “THE GHOST IN THE SHELL × Science SARU: New Animation Project Panel” at Anime Expo 2025, which is being held in Los Angeles, USA. Information about “Ghost in the Shell Exhibition: Ghost and the Shell,” the first-ever large-scale exhibition spanning the entire Ghost in the Shell anime series, was also announced on stage. The exhibition will run from January 30 to April 5, 2026 at Tokyo NODE, Toranomon Hills.

This time, the “Ghost in the Shell” animation will be based on the original work, so I designed it with my own respect and love for Masamune Shirow. It follows the concept of “Ghost in the Shell” while also reflecting my own aesthetic. I think I have proven that even familiar logos can be reborn depending on the idea and concept.

A Fusion of Cyberpunk and Hyperrealism: Sorayama’s Iconic Metallic Aesthetic Meets the World of Ghost in the Shell
The newly revealed title logo for Ghost in the Shell, created by internationally acclaimed artist Hajime Sorayama, is more than just a design update—it symbolizes the evolving identity of a franchise that has always been at the cutting edge of cyberpunk storytelling. Sorayama’s signature hyperrealistic metallic style, often associated with futuristic eroticism and AI bodies, finds a natural home in the philosophical and mechanical universe of Ghost in the Shell. This collaboration reflects a deliberate move to emphasize the blurring boundaries between humanity and technology, beauty and machinery—core themes that have defined the franchise since its inception.
