“Takahata Isao Exhibition – The Man Who Created Japanese Animation,” an exhibition of director Takahata Isao, a close friend of Miyazaki Hayao and known for “3000 Leagues in Search of Mother” and “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” has been scheduled to run from June 27 to September 15 at the Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo.
The exhibition will be held this summer because 2025 marks the 90th anniversary of Takahata’s birth and 80 years since the end of the Pacific War, which had a major impact on Takahata. Studio Ghibli has cooperated in the planning of the exhibition, and an exhibition focusing on “Grave of the Fireflies” is also planned.
In addition, a teaser visual was released using images from “Heidi, Girl of the Alps” and “Grave of the Fireflies,” two of Director Takahata’s most famous works.
The full text of the comment from Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki is as follows:
[Toshiro Suzuki] I was 18 years old when I dreamed of making a movie out of “Grave of the Fireflies,” which I had seen in a magazine. And after more than 20 years, Director Takahata’s film was completed. When I made a secret video and showed it to Shuichi Kato, and he praised it highly, it was the happiest day of my life.
