Weekend Box Office Report (Aug 22–24): Demon Slayer Surpasses Titanic with ¥28 Billion

The domestic weekend box office results for August 22–24 (compiled by Kogyo Tsushinsha) have been announced.


Demon Slayer Stays on Top for 6 Consecutive Weeks

“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Castle Arc – Chapter 1: Akaza Returns” remained at No.1 for the sixth straight weekend since its release.

  • Weekend performance (3 days): 764,000 viewers / ¥1.154 billion
  • Cumulative total: 19.82 million viewers / over ¥28 billion

With this, the film has officially surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic (1997, ¥27.77 billion) to become Japan’s third-highest-grossing film of all time, trailing only:

  1. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) – ¥40.75 billion
  2. Spirited Away (2001) – ¥31.68 billion

As the third admission bonus, a “4th Key Visual Illustration Board” has been distributed nationwide since August 23, limited to 2 million attendees.

Odekake Baby Shark Debuts at No.10

The new anime film “Odekake Baby Shark: Kai’s Friends” entered the chart at 10th place.

Adapted from Penguin Box’s manga and web anime series, it follows the adventures of a baby shark escaping from the retro town of Yao-cho and journeying into the big city.

As the first admission bonus, audiences receive a mini picture book “Baby Shark’s Pancakes” (two cover variations, given at random).
