The latest movie in the Detective Conan series, Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed, is off to a rocket start, attracting 2.3 million viewers and earning over 3.4 billion yen at the box office within just three days of its release. Its opening performance surpassed that of the previous film, Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Five-Pointed Star, by 102%, setting a new record for the highest opening in the series’ history. All eyes are now on how far this new record will go.

In this article, we’ll introduce the anime episodes featuring Yamato Kansuke, Uehara Yui, and Morofushi Takaaki — key members of the “Nagano Prefectural Police Team” and central characters in the new movie. Some of these episodes are closely linked to the events in Afterimage of the One-Eyed, so watching them beforehand will make your movie experience even more enjoyable! We’ll also cover the basic profiles and relationships of these three characters.

■ Yamato Kansuke

Kansuke Yamato is a police inspector with the Nagano Prefectural Police. While pursuing a parolee who had gone missing, he was caught in an avalanche and left unconscious in critical condition. As a result, he lost the use of his left eye and injured his left leg, causing him to walk with a cane. Kansuke is childhood friends with Yui Uehara and has been a rival of Takaaki Morofushi since their elementary school days. He is currently 35 years old. Interestingly, he is aware that Conan Edogawa is the true mind behind Kogoro Mouri’s deductions.

■ Yui Uehara

When Yui Uehara first appeared, she had left her detective duties but later returned to the force after the “Furin Kazan” case. She is a childhood friend of Kansuke Yamato and harbors feelings for him. After Yamato went missing following the avalanche, Yui mistakenly believed he had died and married Yoshiro Torada to uncover the truth behind the downfall of Kai Kuroto, a detective she greatly admired. Even after resuming her role as a detective under her maiden name, Uehara, she still habitually calls Yamato “Kan-chan.” She is 29 years old. (More about Kai Kuroto’s downfall will be explained in the “Furin Kazan” section below.)

■ Takaaki Morofushi

Takaaki Morofushi is a childhood friend of Kansuke Yamato. Despite graduating at the top of his class from the Faculty of Law at Touto University, he is known for his eccentricity, having joined the prefectural police headquarters as a non-career officer without taking the national career exam. After independently pursuing a case involving Yamato’s disappearance and forcibly solving it, he was temporarily transferred to a local police station but later returned to the prefectural police headquarters. His nickname is “Koumei,” derived from the on-reading of his given name. He is 35 years old.

Takaaki’s younger brother, Hiromitsu Morofushi, served in the Public Security Bureau and infiltrated the Black Organization as “Scotch” before dying in the line of duty. After their parents were murdered when they were young, Takaaki was taken in by relatives in Nagano, while Hiromitsu was raised in Tokyo. Hiromitsu was also a childhood friend and police academy classmate of Rei Furuya (also known as Toru Amuro). Takaaki had been introduced to Furuya through Kagemitsu, a connection he recalls during episodes 1003–1005, “The Perfect Game of 36 Squares.”
