Director Mamoru Hosoda’s latest film “Endless Scarlet” is set to premiere in Japan on November 21, with a U.S. theatrical release following on December 12. Alongside this announcement, the story, teaser visual, and a new trailer have been unveiled.
Mamoru Hosoda, renowned for acclaimed works such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006), Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, Mirai, and Belle, continues to captivate audiences worldwide. At the production press conference held on December 23 last year, Hosoda revealed an intense teaser visual featuring the protagonist, Princess Scarlett, and shared:
“I felt a sense of closure in the world of U from Belle, and with this film, I wanted to push the boundaries of animation with an entirely new approach.”
The story, previously kept under wraps, is now revealed: Scarlett, a princess whose father—the king—was murdered, fails to avenge his death. She awakens in the “Land of the Dead,” a place filled with madness, where those who don’t take revenge and reach the “Endless Place” will fade into nothingness. Scarlett embarks on a perilous journey of vengeance—will she succeed before she disappears?
Hosoda shared that the inspiration came in March 2022, reflecting on how the end of the COVID-19 pandemic gave way to rising global conflicts:
“As the world asked how to live in a time of uncertainty, I felt I had to create a film that confronts these earnest feelings.”
Regarding the theme of revenge, he added:
“Vengeance creates endless cycles of retaliation. But how do we escape it? I wanted to portray a protagonist who is pushed into such a dilemma and must decide her path.”
The teaser visual is arresting: Princess Scarlett stands above fallen bodies, her pure white dress stained in blood, holding a sword, her fierce gaze directed at us. The tagline “Should I live?” provokes reflection—does it mirror her inner conflict or challenge the audience?
The 30-second trailer introduces the vast desert world of the “Land of the Dead,” filled with striking imagery—towering castles, crowds, volcanoes, lightning, and even dragons. Scarlett appears wielding her sword with a grim expression, fighting alone against overwhelming odds. Despite the harsh setting, moments of purity are shown, such as her spotless white dress, hinting at emotional depth.
The trailer also reveals Scarlett’s voice for the first time:
“Where am I…?”
she asks a mysterious figure. Who is this person? What role do they play in her journey? And who is the voice behind Scarlett? The teaser leaves viewers full of anticipation.
